William was killed in the fighting by Water Tower Hill. From "Battalion at War " by Michael Moore (page 39):- Sniper fire in "D" Company's area was now becoming very dangerous and Capt. Hockey and Sgt.Bill Wade were posted as missing while trying to locate one particularly troublesome sniper. Heavy artillery concentrations had been put down in the area through which they had been searching and neither man had returned. "Pony" Moore was ordered to take a patrol out in an attempt to try and locate the two men but was unable to find them. Sgt.Wade's body was recovered two months later by a burial party but Capt.Hockey's body was never found. |
